Whilst many people who use the internet at home will do so via a hard wired connection, many others have a laptop or other wireless device that will need a wireless connection in order to run. When it comes to choosing a router there are many options, but the Belkin N600 DB Wireless Dual Band router is an excellent choice.
Compared to many of the routers that are available, this is an attractive option. It is sleek and shiny and doesn’t look out of place in the family room of the home. Set up was easy and fast and the router was ready to have its defaults changed in a
few short minutes.
There are three routers from Belkin in this range, but the DB is the most highly featured of all of them. Yet it is relatively cheap-significantly cheaper than other routers on the market today that offer the same, or similar features to this. This makes it a good option for people who want it all but on a budget, and being from Belkin means that you have a brand that you can trust.
If you don’t have wireless access to your printers, you can network your printer via a USB port that is built into the router. This is a wonderful feature as it allows for you to network your printer, and hence access it and print from any computer that you have on the network.
The wireless signal strength was incredibly good. Having used several other routers in recent history, there were always dead spots in the house that would give little or no access to the network-despite being well within the state range of the router. The Belkin N600 DB however gave strong signal strength throughout the house, with no dead spots and even good strength out in the garden.
A guest log in feature is provided, that you can use when a visitor wants to access your network. This can provide them one time access without you having to give them you permanent home network password, and hence increases the level of security available to you.
Other features are included too but were not tested as they were not necessary for the equipment installed on the network. Some innovative features include the ability to easily move movies around on the network, and the fact that it comes with a security key pre-installed that many people will choose to change to something more memorable.
There were a few problems encountered when administrating the router. The first was that the router’s default IP address is different than most-it is accessed by visiting 192.168.2.1 on a web browser. The second was that once you have logged in on a computer you will forever be able to log in without using the password again, and that means that logging in from a child’s computer may allow them to get in and change settings. The router authenticates a computer via IP address-so logging in on one profile means that all profiles can automatically log in, again posing a risk for children.
Despite the few drawbacks this is an amazing router for cost.
