Norton Anti-virus products have been in use for a number of years, and are very popular. What’s more they have a good reputation for offering solid protection, even though they are one of the more expensive options available. There is an anti-virus program available, as well as one that offers complete online protection too.
The 2011 version has more features than ever before. It is faster than previous versions and causes less of a slow down of the computer than previous ones have. It scans your downloads, installations and also has spyware protection built in. Interestingly, when it finds suspicious files on your computer it tells you where they came from, thus giving you the chance to avoid that site in the future. Additionally there is support available at any time of day, for free, when you have any problems.
Norton even promises to inform you of computer applications that are slowing your computer down so that you can fix the problem and hence improve the performance of your computer. The control center is easy to use and makes it easy to find the functions that you need quickly.
The purchased version of the software was able to be used on three PCs in the same household rather than just the one, There is also a single user version of the software available, that costs a little less-$39.99 compared to $59.99. However if you have even two PCs that you need to protect with Norton, the three computer version is cheaper to buy than two single installation versions.
Installation was simple, and relatively fast. Once installed the program then searched for and installed the updates that were needed to make it current. It then offered to run a full system scan.
Unfortunately this anti-virus does not work well on all connections. With the laptop that it was used on a dial-up connection for a short time, it would not run-it could not get the updates that it needed to install. This was only fixed by running a line from the wireless router to the laptop, which meant that it could not longer be used in that room.
Other problems came when trying to install new software. Windows 7 already pops up dialogue boxes that ask if you are sure that you want to run or install an application-and unfortunately Norton does too. This leaves you with two sets of boxes to click through which quickly becomes an annoyance. It is possible to turn off Norton in order to install new programs, but this defeats the point-you want your computer to be scanned when installing new software so that you know that the software you install is clean.
Whilst is cannot be said for sure that this product will protect from every, no infections have been contracted on any computer that it is installed on. On the other hand, it has detected several threats that were attempting to install themselves on the machines, and isolated or deleted those threats.
Norton has a good reputation behind it, and is easy enough for even the most technically challenged person to install and use.
